Getting a Driving License

First you have to be a UAE resident with a valid visa to be able to apply, you can then approach a registered driving institute in the related emirate to attend driving classes and pass all tests, the requirements differ depending if you are in Dubai or Abudhabi.

Typical required documents:

  • Passport
  • Visa page
  • Emirates ID
  • Passport size photo
  • No objection certificate from sponsor
  • Eye test results

However, if you have a driving license issued by your country the process can be easier, it is applicable for some countries to transfer the driving license with a UAE driving license, in accordance with UAE approved terms & conditions of the driving license transfer.

The age requirement to get a driving licence depends on the vehicle you are planning to drive. The minimum age requirement is as follows:

  • 17 years for motorcycles and for vehicles for people with special needs
  • 18 years for cars and light vehicles
  • 20 years for heavy vehicles and tractors
  • 21 years for buses.

How long is the driving licence valid for?

For UAE and GCCC citizens the driving license is valid for 10 years and 5 years for expats aged 21 years and above.

As long as you are holding a valid international driving license and you are a tourist on a visit visa, you can rent a car.
